Atvir Dres -The Big Picture
Since the release of our public alpha roughly 3 weeks ago, "Atvir Dres: The Last Prince of Tear" has been steadily gaining in popularity, a fact that, in my opinion, reflects the community's desire for new, lore-friendly content. Many of you are probably wondering what the scope of this project will be, and when a final version will be released. The purpose of this article is to give you the broad strokes of my vision for the completed product.
Atvir is currently a fully-developed, voiced companion with a unique backstory and a plethora of companionship options that aren't available for vanilla followers. He has half-an-hour or more of conversation-window driven dialogue, in addition to an equally substantial pool of randomized, "banter" conversation topics. However, this is only the very beginning of what we hope to achieve.
AD, in its final incarnation, will feature several different plotlines with variable outcomes. Additionally, the nature of the Primary Plotline will vary slightly, depending on the player's race, encouraging multiple playthroughs. The list of plotlines we are currently developing are:
-The Romance Plotline, which can occur for players of any race, with the notable exception of Argonians. The goal of the romance plotline is, as you might imagine, to develop a romantic relationship between Atvir and the player (regardless of gender). There will be content and quests spanning the entire relationship, from flirtation to married life, and Atvir's dialogue options will change to reflect the state of your relationship. Note that Atvir will never agree to a Nord marriage; he finds the concept laughable.
-The Rival Plotline. The rival mechanic, which was one of the first ideas I ever had for this mod, will measure a Global Variable that has points added to and subtracted from its value, depending on the player's actions and dialogue choices. This variable essentially measures Atvir's disposition towards the player. If the variable dips too low, the player will notice a change in Atvir's mood, foreshadowing the possibility of betrayal.
If the variable dips lower still, rival mode will activate and Atvir will leave the party. Worse still, he will bear a grudge against the player, and will begin working to thwart his former companion from behind the scenes. This interference will manifest itself through a variety of radiant quests, and could range from stealing and hiding quest items, to hiring thugs to wait in ambush, to framing the player for crimes he or she didn't commit.
The player will get two opportunities to win Atvir back before rival mode becomes permanent. If the player decides to pass on those opportunities, they will be able to track Atvir down to his (randomly determined) lair, and have a final showdown with their former companion.
-The Primary Plotline. As mentioned above, there will be several variations of the Primary Plotline, depending on the player's race and (in the case of Dunmer players) their family background. However, regardless of these choices, the plot will revolve around Atvir's attempts to build an army in exile, for the purposes of liberating the former Dres territories of Southern Morrowind from the Argonians.
By this point, some of you are probably thinking, "All that sounds great, but what's it all leading to? We're stuck in Skyrim, so why write a story that builds to a conclusion in Morrowind?" Well, that's why we're coordinating with the "Return to Morrowind" project, a part of the "Beyond Skyrim" network of mods. While AD's storyline ends in Skyrim, our goal is to allow players who have completed the Primary Plotline to lead Atvir's army to victory (or defeat, or a negotiated settlement) in southern Morrowind as part of RtM. To clarify, this questline will be an addition to the content provided in RtM; you won't be required to have played through AD to explore Morrowind, though the events within will change the nature of the southern mainland.
As you can see, we're in this for the long haul! Stay tuned for more news about our plans for the future, and we'll do our best to keep providing you with top-quality, lore-friendly entertainment!
See you in the game, fetchers!
